Your book represents you and what you care most about sharing with the world. I help you put the right words
in the right place so your book sounds and feels like Who You Are and What You Really Want to Say.
Professional editing ensures that your book is as brilliant as you are.
Leading Authors and Entrepreneurs rely upon Editing Expert and Author Joy Advocate Lauren Johnson to guide them through the rewrite process. She’s been called an “Editorial Angel” by the director of the Alliance for Independent Authors for good reason. Lauren’s methods help authors put their best book forward and experience author joy along the way.
Lauren’s writing career has spanned two decades and includes everything from vice president of corporate communications to ghostwriter of fiction and nonfiction books.
Her first book, Flying Lessons: A Single Mom’s Guide to Successful Empty Nesting , is a two-time Transformational Author award winner. Her second book, chronicling her year as a nomad, will be published soon.
The point of editing is to bring out the best in your writing. Partnering with the right editor is one of the most important investments you’ll make as an author.
The editing process can be exactly like you want it to be! We can make it such a great experience that you’re inspired to keep on writing. I like to infuse the process with fun and excellence, so you can produce a book you’ll be happy and confident to publish

First, we talk about you and your book—the genre, the number of words, your goals for the book (whether it’s to build your business, attract more clients, use as a free opt-in gift, generate speaking gigs, or become an indie author), and where you are in the creative process. If we’re a good fit, then we customize your next steps based on what’s right for you: that could be an editorial review, a coaching session, copyediting, developmental editing, or a final proofread.
Developmental editing: $.10/word
Copyediting: $.06/word (based on starting word count)
Line editing: $.03/word (based on starting word count)
Proofreading: $.02/word (based on word count after formatting for publication)
That depends on you and your deadline and the type of editing your book requires, but can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Professional editors are in high demand, so it’s best to plan weeks to months advance to hire the editor of your choice.
Beyond editorial expertise in your genre and/or subgenre, working with an editor should be a close working relationship and partnership. You want an editor who is as enthusiastic about your book as you are and available to mentor you and answer questions. Ultimately, your editor is intuitive and attuned to your voice and your style. A bonus is that they’re fun to work with.
An author retreat is an experiential deep-dive into the creative process that forces you to work on your book for a focused period of time. It works for any stage of the fiction or nonfiction writing process—whether it’s finding the perfect structure, improving character development, completing a designated word count, or fleshing out your story. It’s all about accomplishing the writing you want to get done and experiencing the author joy that goes right along with it.
